Softball Sweeps Indiana State

first_img TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Drake University softball team swept Indiana State in a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Drake (15-11, 5-0 MVC) cruised to a 15-6 win in the first game and blanked Indiana State, 12-0, (7-22, 1-4 MVC) in the second game. Both games went just five innings as the Bulldogs have won their first five MVC games. In the first game Friday, Indiana State took a brief 2-0 lead in the first inning before Drake’s bats broke out for a season high in runs scored. The Bulldogs answered with six runs in the second inning with one run coming off a Sycamores’ errors, three from a double by Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) and two runs from freshman Taryn Pena’s (Columbia, Ill.) first career home run. Indiana State got a pair of runs back in the next inning, but in between Sowa plated two more runs with another double and junior Ashlie Chambers (Ankeny, Iowa) launched a solo home run. Drake led 10-4 going to the fifth inning as the Bulldogs added to their big lead with five more runs in the fifth. Indiana State scored two runs in its final at-bat, but it wasn’t enough as Drake ended the game early via the eight-run rule. Sowa finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, two doubles and five runs batted in. Chambers also had three hits, including her first home run this season. Pena and fellow freshman Gabbie Jonas (Omaha, Neb.) each had their first career home runs. Jonas had two RBI while Pena drove in three runs. Starting pitcher Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) improved her record in the circle to 11-5 overall as Newman pitched four innings and allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) tossed one inning in relief of Newman and allowed two runs. Sowa scored the first runs in game number two with a two-run home run in the first inning. In the third inning, junior Kaitlyn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) ripped a two-run double and Sowa launched a solo home run. In the fourth inning, Smith drove in one run with a single and two more runs scored on the play on a Sycamores error. Sowa capped a career game with her third home run of the contest, a grand slam in the fifth inning. Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa) then retired Indiana State in order to give Drake a 12-0 win that went just five innings again. McKinnon pitched all five innings and allowed just five hits while striking out two Sycamores as she improved her record to 4-5 with the win. Sowa went 3-for-4 at the plate with three home runs, four runs scored and a career-high seven RBI.
