With promising coronavirus vaccines continuing to hit the headlines, stock markets have been rallying strongly in November. Today, I’m covering two FTSE 250 shares I’ve been adding as part of my own buying spree.FTSE 250 contrarian playLike most in the market, online price comparison site Moneysupermarket.com (LSE: MONY) hasn’t had the easiest 2020 so far. In its most recent update, the FTSE 250 member revealed a 16% decline in revenue over Q3, due to travel restrictions and banks pulling products from the market.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…But let’s not get distracted by a temporary period of troublesome trading — Moneysupermarket still ticks many boxes on a quality-focused investing checklist:Sky-high returns on capital employed? Check.Huge operating margins? Check.A strong brand? Check.Net cash on the balance sheet? Check (£5m).Still paying dividends? Check. In addition to all this, Moneysupermarket should benefit from a rush for travel insurance when people start flying again. Even those that aren’t so inclined to travel will still be wanting to use the site to save money on monthly bills. Could I make greater gains buying battered travel and leisure stocks? Quite possibly. The issue with this strategy, however, is that many of these simply aren’t very good businesses when it comes to making money for their shareholders. And, as Warren Buffett would surely attest, it’s the quality of a business that really matters in the long run.Assuming things do get back to normal next year, Moneysupermarket shares trade at 17 times forecast FY21 earnings. That still looks great value to me, considering the five-year average PE of 22.Down but not outA second battered FTSE 250 stock I’ve bought more of in November is high-performance polymer supplier Victrex (LSE: VCT). Like Moneysupermarket, recent trading hasn’t been great, due to the chaos caused by the coronavirus.Last month’s update spoke of end markets remaining “subdued” after sales volume and revenue fell 26% (to 695 tonnes) and 27% (to £55,7m) respectively in Q4. Job cuts will help mitigate the company’s high fixed costs, but it’s hardly the sort of news to make investors bullish. There’s also Brexit to ponder. As negative as this sounds, Victrex remains a classy operator. Let’s look at some of the attractions: High returns on capital employed? Check.High operating margins? Check.Operating in multiple industries. Check.A market leader in what it does? Check.Lots of net cash on the balance sheet? Check (£67.4m).Dividends? Check (a dividend for FY2020 is expected).Growth opportunities? Check. Thanks to its exposure to the aerospace industry, I also think Victrex is another good ‘picks and shovels’ play on the recovery in travel. Tapping into the growing trend for green investments, the company’s lightweight thermoplastics help make aircraft more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.Play the long gameNaturally, big gains won’t come overnight. As an investor however, it pays to distinguish between short-term hurdles and game-changing problems. The coronavirus, I submit, is the former.A valuation of 24 times forecast earnings does look dear, given current headwinds, but this should reduce as profits recover over the next couple of years. Just like star UK fund manager Terry Smith, I think price is of secondary importance compared to buying a great company with solid growth prospects. This belief certainly hasn’t adversely affected the performance of his Fundsmith Equity Fund.Victrex’s eventual rebound should be worth the wait.   Renowned stock-picker Mark Rogers and his analyst team at The Motley Fool UK have named 6 shares that they believe UK investors should consider buying NOW.So if you’re looking for more stock ideas to try and best position your portfolio today, then it might be a good day for you. How the World Rankings will be impacted by this weekend’s Test results

first_imgFriday Jun 22, 2018 How the World Rankings will be impacted by this weekend’s Test results The third week of the June Internationals will be a bit of a dead rubber for some, while one match in particular is a series decider. Here is a look at all the big games over the weekend, and how the official World Rankings might change when they are updated on Monday.  Results from last weekend’s matches saw Wales jump up to third in the world, while England dropped to their lowest in some time, after their series loss to South Africa in Bloemfontein.New Zealand cannot go anywhere as they are untouchable at the top, but as with South Africa, they will be looking to win their series 3-0, after already being 2-0 up against France. NEW ZEALAND vs FRANCEWith two full points on offer for a win of more than 15 points, France (8) can climb one place to seventh. For the All Blacks (1), there is no reward for victory but a heavy defeat, combined with a big win for Ireland against Australia, would see their cushion at the top cut to less than half a point.AUSTRALIA vs IRELANDAny form of victory will be enough for Australia (4) to climb above Wales (3) and into third place. If Australia lose badly and South Africa and England draw, the Wallabies will equal their joint lowest ranking of sixth. Ireland (2) are certain to finish the weekend in second place whatever the result.SOUTH AFRICA vs ENGLANDIf the Springboks (5) wrap up a 3-0 series win and Australia lose at home to Ireland, they will leapfrog the Wallabies and move into fourth place.Having dropped to their lowest ranking since March 2016, the good news for England (6) fans is that they cannot drop any lower even if the series is lost 3-0. Indeed, with a fraction under two rating points on offer for a big win, third place is within their reach if Australia fail to beat Ireland.ARGENTINA vs SCOTLANDThe rewards on offer for a big Pumas (10) win are just enough to take the home side above Fiji and into ninth place, as long as the Islanders don’t beat Tonga by more than 15 points in Suva.Scotland (7) can claw back 1.17 of the points they lost in defeat to the USA if they win well against Argentina. However, that still would be enough for them to catch England in sixth place, even if Eddie Jones’ side ends their tour of South Africa with a whimper.FIJI vs TONGAWorld Rugby Pacific Nations Cup champions Fiji (9) cannot move any higher than their present position of ninth as there are only five-hundredths of a point on offer for an emphatic win.A big win for Tonga (14) would move them as high as 11th, for the first time since September 2015 if Japan versus Georgia also ends in a draw.JAPAN vs GEORGIAJapan (11) will pick up one full rating point if they bounce back from last weekend’s loss to Italy and win well. That will still not be enough to lift them any higher than their present position of 11th.Georgia (12) will move into the world’s top 10 for the first time since the rankings were introduced in October 2003 if they win well and Argentina slip up at home to Scotland.CANADA vs USACanada (22) will reclaim 21st place from Hong Kong if they upset the form book and beat neighbours USA (15). For the Eagles, it is not possible for them to move any higher than 15th although a big win would see them close to within two-tenths of Tonga if the ‘Ikale Tahi are well beaten by Fiji. You can view the full world rankings, 1 – 105, herecredit: world rugbyADVERTISEMENT Posted By: rugbydump Share Send Thanks Sorry there has been an error Related Articles 81 WEEKS AGO scottish prop saves fire victim 84 WEEKS AGO New Rugby X tournament insane 112 WEEKS AGO Vunipola stands by his comments supporting… From the WebThis Video Will Soon Be Banned. Van driver one of many incredible escapes during Storm Darwin

first_imgAdvertisement WhatsApp RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR TAGSdamagefeaturedfull-imageMusic LimerickStorm Darwin #HearThis: New music and video from Limerick rapper Strange Boy Linkedin NewsBreaking newsCommunityVan driver one of many incredible escapes during Storm DarwinBy Staff Reporter – February 13, 2014 948 Twitter Emma Langford shortlisted for RTE Folk Award and playing a LIVE SHOW!!! this Saturday Andrew Carey Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up [email protected] WAS a picture that went viral and was described as being published in a “tweet with the most impact of the #StormDarwin trend” on twitter. But the story behind the crushed white van on the Knocklisheen Road out of Limerick last Wednesday afternoon is as spectacular as the image itself. He pulled over to help a woman whose car got stuck in a ditch as she avoided a part fallen tree on the road. When Mark had finished he was returning to his white Opel van parked on the side of the road. A normal course of events you would have thought for a Good Samaritan, but what unfolded after that was nothing short of a miraculous escape from death for the 37-year-old. Hurricane force winds knocked a second tree during Storm Darwin crushing Mr Quaid’s parked van just yards in front of him.Mr Quaid, on driving out of Limerick towards Meelick in Co Clare, described the tree lined road and noticing the woman stranded in her car. “Ya it was a small country road and trees on it, big ones on either side. I saw the lady on the road and as smaller tree had fallen blocking the side of the road. She was trying to pass it and got stuck in the ditch.“When I went by I said to myself that I had to help her as she had her kids in the car and was stuck”.He described hearing the trees creaking as he pushed the car from the ditch. The female driver, having benefited from Mr Quaid’s assistance, left the scene with her three small children and was described as being “very grateful, and she said ‘thank you so much.’ She was happy to get out of there”, he added. The next minute, the builder from the Ennis Road near Coonagh, said he “turned around and a tree was falling on the van just as I was walking back to it. It totally wrecked it,” he said. The 37 year old Good Samaritan then left then to get help for himself but on returning his van said that someone had stolen all his tools from the stranded van. “It was unbelievable,” he said, adding that he was fairly “ticked off over the tools” being stolen.“I came back and the few handy bits I had in the van, power tools and stuff like that was all taken.” “That tree crushed it totally, the stuff was whipped and now I have no insurance to cover any of it”. Speaking the day after the miraculous escape, Mr Quaid said that he received a call hours after the tree falling to notify him that his van was ablaze still pinned by the tree. Mr Quaid told the Limerick Post that he managed to get a temporary loan of a van to continue with his work. “Sure you have to do what you can to keep going”, he added. Meantime, the huge clean up operation around Limerick was again in full swing this Thursday in the wake of Storm Darwin. The costs of repairs are expected to run into the millions as the tolls are tallied around in the homes and businesses damaged. Round the clock repairs are being carried out by ESB crews aim to restore power to hundreds of homes in the city and county, however man new faults are being reported even up to 24 hours after the storm raged through the Mid West. University of Limerick campus at Plassey was fully open and operational despite approximately 60 trees being blown over during the winds that peaked at over 170km/h. A number of large trees fell in the People’s Park as well as large branches and debris scattering other public parks in the city. Limerick City Council’s Parks Department has closed all parks and is reviewing the situation on an ongoing basis.Building repair works are also continuing as efforts are made to asses damage and the structural integrity of stricken buildings including Limerick Boat Club that lost its roof as well as the red brick facade wall over head Sarsfield Pharmacy in the city after a large portion of it crashed onto the footpath below.center_img No vaccines in Limerick yet Email Walk in Covid testing available in Limerick from Saturday 10th April Previous articleThrough living history’s lensNext articleA blessed site for art production performance Staff Reporterhttp://www.limerickpost.ie Facebook #SaucySoul: Room 58 – ‘Hate To See You Leave’ Print Celebrating a ground breaking year in music from Limerick last_img read more

Proposed provisional license for ABS-CBN ‘illegal’ – Palace

first_imgLawyer Lorenzo Gadon has recently fileda petition for prohibition to SC, asking it to issue a temporary restrainingorder against the NTC from complying with the House of Representatives’ appealto the commission to grant ABS-CBN a provisional authority to operate “from May4, 2020, until such time that the Congress has made a decision on itsapplication.” Presidential Spokesperson SalvadorPanelo said in a media briefing that the National Telecommunications Commission(NTC) has no authority to grant a provisional authority in favor of thenetwork. The congressional franchise of ABS-CBNwas granted on Mar. 30, 1995 but the broadcast operations of the local mediagiant only started 15 days after./PN Gadon, in his petition, said the NTC hasno jurisdiction to issue a permit to operate when ABS-CBN’s franchise expiressince its functions are “merely regulatory and supervisory.” MANILA – Malacañang deemed it “illegal”to grant broadcast firm ABS-CBN a provisional license to operate pending therenewal of its expiring franchise in May. “A provisional authority cannot be legalbecause the NTC cannot give provisional authority if there is no franchise. Ifthe franchise expires, then there is nothing to give provisional authority foran extension,” Panelo said. “To put an end to any question on thelegality and constitutionality, pass a bill, make it into law, grant themprovisional authority,” Panelo urged the Congress. ABS-CBN’s franchise expires on May 4this year, in the event that Congress and Duterte fail to give their nod on thenetwork’s bid for an extension of its legislative franchise for another 25years. Joe Maddon’s bulletin-board material didn’t resonate with Dodgers

first_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers reached the high point of their season on Aug. 25. They were 91-36 and on pace to win 116 games with about five weeks left in the regular season. Win number 91 came at the expense of the Milwaukee Brewers, who were three games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.Coincidentally, the New York Times caught up with Cubs manager Joe Maddon in Philadelphia that day. “I’m very confident playing against them, too – absolutely,” Maddon said of the Dodgers. “I like the way we match against them – a lot, not a little bit.”The timing of the quote raised eyebrows. Chicago was the defending champion but hardly occupied a comfortable place in the standings. The Dodgers were matching well against every team. Was this the best bulletin board material of all-time, or just this year?“Didn’t think about it after the moment,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Heard it, and (Maddon) has a lot of confidence in his guys, as much as I have in our guys, so it’s going to be a great series.” Clayton Kershaw, who will start for the Dodgers in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series on Saturday, said he wasn’t aware of the quote at all.“I don’t know what that means. I don’t know how teams match up,” Kershaw said. “I don’t know the specifics of all of that. So that’s great he thinks that. That’s awesome. I’m sure they need to think that, so that’s great.”Since August, some funny things happened on the way to the anticipated Cubs-Dodgers NLCS rematch. The Dodgers went into a tailspin immediately after Maddon’s proclamation, finishing the season 13-22 to extinguish their chance at the regular-season wins record. The Cubs went 24-11 the rest of the way, the best mark in the National League. But Chicago also struggled to put away the Washington Nationals in its first-round series. Maddon used seven pitchers in Thursday’s Game 5, including starters Kyle Hendricks and Jose Quintana. Closer Wade Davis pitched the final 2-1/3 innings. The Cubs, whose cross-country flight Friday took 10 hours instead of five because of an unscheduled stop in Albuquerque, figure to be a step behind the Dodgers, who have had four days off going into the series opener.center_img “It’s just this first game,” Maddon said of the impact on his pitching staff. “That’s what you have to try to figure out.”As for the bulletin-board material he might have provided in August, Maddon said his feelings were more a reflection on his team than the Dodgers.“Eventually we just started playing our game,” he said. “The defense tightened up. The pertinent hits started to occur. But primarily the pitching got better and all of that really came together. So, yeah, I love it.“Listen, you start the year defending champs, you go to spring training without the same expectations that you had the year you weren’t the champs, and you get through a tough start. Then eventually the guys start showing up. I’ll take it.”GAME 1 STARTER TBDMaddon said he and the Cubs’ front office would meet Friday night to choose a starting pitcher for Game 1. He mentioned left-hander Jose Quintana and right-hander John Lackey as possible options.Lackey is 0-2 against the Dodgers this season, collecting one loss in April in Chicago and another in Los Angeles in May. After going 12-12 with a 4.59 ERA in the regular season, Lackey didn’t pitch in the NLDS.The 38-year-old right-hander has pitched 26 playoff games (23 starts) in his career, going 8-6 with a 3.27 ERA. Lackey won World Series titles with the 2002 Angels, 2013 Red Sox and 2016 Cubs.Quintana hasn’t faced the Dodgers since June 2014, when he was pitching for the Chicago White Sox. His 5-2/3-inning start against the Nationals in Game 3 of the NLDS was the first postseason appearance of his career. He threw 12 pitches in Game 5, allowing one hit, one walk, and retiring two batters.Left-hander Jon Lester, who started Wednesday’s Game 4 in Chicago, is a candidate to start Game 2 of the NLCS, Maddon said.last_img read more
