State of the Union: Tennessee, Ohio, Montana and more

Wagers would also be permitted via an approved mobile platform.Should the bill come into law, Tennessee would become the first state in the US to offer only internet sports betting to consumers. New Jersey is currently the only state to have both legal land-based and online sports wagering service available. The Tennessee Sports Gaming Act also includes measures that would see licence-holders pay tax at a rate of 10% on adjusted gross income.Licences to offer legal sports betting in Tennessee would cost operators $7,500 (£5,680/€6,600). A separate licence would be required for each sportsbook in the state.Consumers would need to be at least 21 years old to place a sports bet and also be physically located inside the state’s boundaries.Eklund and O’Brien file sports betting bill Lawmakers in Ohio are to run the rule over a new bill that could lead to the state legalising land-based and online sports betting.Sponsored by Senators John Eklund and Sean O’Brien, SB111 would permit the state’s 11 casinos and racinos to offer legal sports wagering to consumers in Ohio.SB111, the first sports betting bill introduced in the Ohio Senate in the current legislative session, sets out measures that would allow for remote sign-up for players.Venues that want to offer sports betting services would need to pay a licence fee of $100,000 (£75,500/€88,300). Licensees would be able to enter partnerships with operators in order to offer sports wagering.Casinos and racinos that secure a licence would be subject to a tax rate of 6.25% on gross sports betting revenue. However, the bill omits any language relating to a so-called ‘integrity fee’ for professional sports leagues.Montana bill heads for committee hearing
Lawmakers in Montana are to consider a new bill that would legalise land-based, online and mobile sports betting in the state.SB 330, also known as the Montana Sports Betting Act, is scheduled for a hearing with the Senate’s Business, Labour, and Economic Affairs Committee on March 19.The bill sets out provisions for operators to offer an interactive sports wagering platform via a website or a mobile device to consumers located inside the premises of a licensed gambling facility.Licences would cost an initial $1,000 (£754/€880), while operators would also need to pay an annual renewal fee of $1,000. Sports wagering licences would expire on June 30 of each year.Operators that secure a licence would be permitted to work with a third-party in order to run a sports betting platform in the state. Such partnerships would be covered by an associated gambling business licence, which would permit the leasing of sports betting equipment, systems, or other items necessary to offer sports wagering. All licensed sportsbook operators would be subject to a tax rate of 8.5% of their adjusted gross betting receipts, less winnings paid and payments to the federal government as federal excise tax.New Hampshire betting bill progresses to Senate New Hampshire is a step closer to regulated sports betting after a bill that would legalise such activities in the state advanced to the Senate. The New Hampshire House of Representatives has passed an amended version of House Bill 480 by a vote of 269-82, with the bill now moving forward to the Senate for further discussion.Should the bill come into law, consumers would be able to place bets at various retail locations across the state, as well as via online and mobile platforms. The New Hampshire Lottery Commission would be responsible for regulating the market. The current version of the bill does not clarify how much the licences would cost, nor the level of tax sports betting operators would face. However, a fiscal note on the bill suggests sports wagering could generate up to $7.5m (£5.7m/€6.6m) in revenue during the first year of regulation.New Jersey gaming revenue grows to $241.2m
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has reported a 25.6% year-on-year increase in gaming revenue in February, though the contributions from igaming and sports betting fell sequentially.Total gaming revenue for the month grew to $241.2m (£181.9m/€213.2m), with the majority of the total coming from land-based gaming. The channel accounted for $196.7m of February’s total – up 15.7% –  comprising $139.6m of slot machine revenue and $57.1m from table games.iGaming revenue, meanwhile, was up 44.4% year-on-year to $31.7m, though this represented a 5.5% decline from January.Looking to sports betting, February revenue came in at $12.7m. While there is no prior year comparison, as legal wagering did not launch in the state until June 14, 2018, the monthly total represents a 32.2% month-on-month decline from January, which included the National Football League (NFL) playoffs.Pennsylvania wagering revenue falls in February
Sports betting revenue in Pennsylvania fell by 25.4% month-on-month in February despite the state’s handle only falling slightly, according to the latest figures released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).Pennsylvania’s sports wagering handle totalled $31.5m (£23.7m/€27.7m) last month, compared to January’s record figure of $32m and almost double the $16.2m posted in December. However, sports betting revenue slumped from $2.61m in January to $1.95m in February as a result of player winnings. Pennsylvania was able to take $700,850 in tax from sports wagering activities during the month. The decline in both revenue and handle, albeit the latter only being a slight drop on the previous month, comes despite the NFL’s showpiece Super Bowl event taking place in February.NY Governor unsure of online wagering
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has again professed his reluctance to consider online and mobile wagering in the state.Speaking to public radio network WAMC, Cuomo said he was “not a fan” of permitting sports betting outside of casino walls.New York is set to open a public consolation on regulations for sports betting, which only permit in-person wagering at the state’s tribal and commercial casinos. Under these regulations, which impose an 8.5% tax rate on the venues’ sports betting revenue, racetracks, racinos and off-track betting facilities will remain banned from offering sports betting.Professional sports teams throw weight behind Missouri bill Missouri-based sports teams the St Louis Cardinals and Kanas City Royals have voiced support for a proposal to legalise sports betting in the state. HB119, filed by Representative Cody Smith would permit online and in-person sports betting, with licensees taxed at 6.25% of gross revenue. Applicants will pay a fee of $10,000, followed by an annual administrative fee of $5,000 if their application is successful. Licences will last for five years, after which operators must pay an additional $10,000 for their certification to be assessed for renewal. The bill had its first reading in the Missouri House of Representatives in January, with a public hearing held earlier this month. That hearing saw a representative from Major League Baseball testify in favour of the proposals. The bill is to be scrutinised by the House General Laws Committee before it can progress further. Ukraine’s cabinet approves gambling legalisation draft law

first_img Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved the government’s new Action Program, which includes a draft law that would legalise gambling in the country. Topics: Casino & games Legal & compliance Sports betting Poker Slots Ukraine’s cabinet approves gambling legalisation draft law Casino & games AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved the government’s new Action Program, which includes a draft law that would legalise gambling in the country. The text of the draft bill is not currently public, but according to the cabinet’s announcement, the law would permit gambling “exclusively on the territory of hotels, with use of gambling equipment with software that meets international standards.”Prime Minister Alexei Goncharuk said at a press briefing on Monday (30 September) that the bill was motivated by the presence of illegal slot machines around Ukraine.“The government has drafted a bill on the president’s instructions and we voted it on Sunday, it will be tabled in parliament in the next few days,” Goncharuk said. “You know what’s going on: you go outside, you see these slot machines, next to the pawnshops. I don’t think we need to explain what the problem is.“A lot of people are suffering from this and we want to protect people who are addicted, because people then have depression, suicides, families are destroyed, people lose money. These are tens of thousands of broken human lives, and we want this to end in Ukraine. There should be no such thing in civilized countries.“The bill spells out how we propose to regulate gambling, and lotteries will be regulated separately. But the main goal is to remove slot machines from the streets, to reduce this disaster they create for us.”According to reports from Ukrainian newspaper Ukrayinska Pravda, the bill will include a licence fee of UAH 38m (£1.3m/€1.4mm/$1.5m) for operating a casino in Kiev, UAH 25m for a casino in one of the four other cities with a population of a million or more and UAH 12.5m for a casino anywhere else. The cost of a bookmaking licence will be set by a new body, but must not be lower than UAH 750,000 while a slot machine licence will cost UAH 7.5m and a poker license UAH 1.3m. All licence fees are set in reference to the minimum wage and would increase with any minimum wage rises. All gambling except state-run lotteries became illegal in Ukraine in 2009, after nine people were killed in a fire at a slots parlour in Dnipropetrovsk in the east of the nation, but the country has looked to reintroduce legal gambling since 2015, when a new bill to legalise and regulate gambling activities across the country was introduced. The country’s government had previously pledged in April 2017 to legalise gambling by 2018, and earlier this month, the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, commissioned the country’s new government to pass laws to legalise gambling by the end of this year as part of a range of measures designed to stimulate the economy. Buzz Bingo to close more than a quarter of UK clubs

first_img15th July 2020 | By contenteditor Topics: Casino & games Finance Bingo Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Buzz Bingo to close more than a quarter of UK clubs Email Address Bingo Buzz Bingo is to permanently close more than a quarter of its UK bingo halls, with over 500 employees set to lose their jobs. Buzz Bingo is to permanently close more than a quarter of its UK bingo halls, with over 500 employees set to lose their jobs. The operator – formerly Gala Bingo – has announced that 26 of its 91 bingo halls in the UK are to close due to what the company expects will be an “unsustainable operating environment” for the foreseeable future. Some 573 of its 3,400 employees will be potentially impacted by the decision, with most having been furloughed since Buzz Bingo’s venues closed on 21 March due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.Buzz Bingo released the details as part of a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) following a period of productive consultation with its various stakeholders, including landlords. It said it has reached agreements with landlords to better align the rents of certain clubs relative to forecast trading.Buzz Bingo’s owner, Caledonia Investments, has indicated its willingness to provide an additional £22m of equity capital once the CVA becomes effective, which is in addition to the £5m that it invested in Buzz Bingo in May 2020.Chris Matthews, chief executive of Buzz Bingo, said: “The ongoing pandemic has had far-reaching consequences for the entire leisure and hospitality sector and an immediate and significant impact on our business.“Following a thorough review of our options, the proposed CVA will restructure our retail portfolio to ensure we are well positioned for a return to growth, while adapting to the ongoing, challenging environment as we start to reopen the majority of our clubs.“Our lenders are supporting our plans and our owners, Caledonia will be investing into the new structure to further strengthen our future business.“The restructure will, very sadly, impact a number of our colleagues and my priority is to support all those affected and keep them fully informed as we continue with this process. I would like to thank every single one of our colleagues for their continued understanding and commitment over this period.”Buzz Bingo said it will seek creditor approval of the CVA Proposal, which is due on 3 August. The online business will continue to trade as usual during this period. The majority of Buzz Bingo’s clubs are set to reopen from 6 August, with the operator saying it is eager to secure a sustainable long-term future for the business and its remaining 2,800 employees. Bingo halls in Edinburgh Westerhailes, Milton Keynes, Salford and Wolverhampton are among those that will close.Buzz Bingo said that since lockdown it has sought to reduce the impact by minimising costs, reducing senior management pay and making use of the Government’s furlough scheme.“Despite this, Buzz Bingo’s daily operations and its ability to generate revenues from its retail club portfolio has been severely impacted,” it said in a statement.“The management believe the proposed CVA provides the best possible outcome for all of Buzz Bingo’s stakeholders as it looks to secure a sustainable long-term future for the business and its remaining employees.”Gala Leisure completed a £40m (€46m/$53m) transformation of its Gala Bingo division to Buzz Bingo in 2018, with its website and around 100 venues rebranded. This came after investment trust company Caledonia Investments acquired the division from Gala Coral Group for a total consideration of £241m in 2015.Melanie Leech, chief executive of the British Property Federation (BPF) which is a trade association for UK residential and commercial real estate companies, said it has worked closely with Buzz Bingo on developing the CVA plan.“These situations are never easy, particularly now for the retail, hospitality and leisure businesses on our high streets at the sharp end of the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.“Property owners, however, need to take into consideration the impact on their investors, including the millions of people whose savings and pensions are invested in commercial property, as they vote on any CVA proposal.“Buzz Group and AlixPartners engaged with the BPF before launching this CVA proposal. This has provided us an opportunity to improve understanding of property owners’ interests and concerns, but ultimately it will be for individual property owners to decide how they will vote on the CVA.”last_img read more

Danish channelisation hits record high of 90% in 2020

first_imgThis represents a significant change from 2019, when women held just 19% of online gaming accounts in Denmark. Topics: Casino & games Finance Lottery Sports betting Full year results 2020 The regulator held 375 permits for non-profit lotteries in 2020, along with 325 permits for slot machines, 35 for online casino including 3 revenue limited licences, 23 for sports betting including 4 revenue restricted permits, and 9 for land-based casinos. Full year results 2020 Slot machines brought in a significantly reduced sum, down 29.3% to DKK986m, while land-based casinos’ contribution fell 31.7% to DKK239m. The market share spent on online gaming compared to land-based increased to 59% last year, compared to 54% in 2019. This figure has been steadily growing from around 31% in 2012, and may have been accelerated last year by land-based closures caused by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The report showed that in 2020, Denmark had a total of 771 licensees offering gambling, as well as 360 further non-profit lotteries which are reported to the Gambling Authority but do not require a licence. Tags: Spillemyndigheden AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter 17th June 2021 | By Conor Mulheir Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter According to the report, in Europe only the UK, Italy, the Czech Republic and Spain have a higher rate of channelisation than Denmark. The report showed how the jurisdiction’s total GGR corresponded to Denmark’s gross domestic product (GDP), as a way of measuring the gaming industry’s performance against the economy more broadly. Of the total GGR given, the biggest contributor was the lotteries industry, which brought in DKK3.20bn, down 0.1% on 2019’s figure. Next, online casino brought in DKK2.45bn, a slight increase from DKK2.35bn in 2019, whereas sports betting was down 8.9%, at DKK2.29bn.center_img The report also showed that gross gaming revenue (GGR) across all verticals in the jurisdiction was down 6.5% in 2020, at DKK9.17bn (£1.05bn/€1.23bn/$1.47bn). Previously, the regulator had published figures for all verticals besides lottery. Regions: Denmark The Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) has released its Gaming Market in Figures 2020 report, showing that channelisation in the jurisdiction reached a record high of 90% last year. The largest demographic group which made up Danish online gambling customers was men aged 26-35, accounting for 23% of online players. Overall, men made up 76% of online gaming accounts, while women held the remaining 24%. Its average annual consumption of DKK2,086 per adult put the jurisdiction behind all the other Nordic countries – Norway, Finland, Iceland and Sweden – as well as Malta and Ireland, in spend. However, Denmark was still ahead of the UK, Italy and Cyprus, which make up the rest of the top ten gaming spenders per capita in Europe. Danish channelisation hits record high of 90% in 2020 The average spend on gaming per person came to DKK37.80 per week in 2020, compared to DKK40.62 in 2019. The level of channelisation, or players who used operators which are licensed by the local regulator, was up slightly from 88% in 2019, but showed a significant increase from 69% in 2012 when the market was liberalised. In 2020, GGR accounted for 0.39% of Denmark’s GDP, which was a reduction compared to 0.42% in 2019, however the figure has remained stable between 0.39% and 0.43% since 2012. Of the online spend, 64% came from customers using mobile devices, up from 60% in 2019. The report showed where Denmark ranked in Europe in terms of average spend per capita, showing that the country comes in seventh place for the jurisdictions that spend the most money on gaming per adult in 2020.
